If you don't already know, the Carnival of Venice is one of the biggest street parties in the world, ranked right next to the Carnival of Rio. It is a time where people from all over the world gather and put on masks to be someone else for the day- it is a time for one to escape reality and step away from judgement that comes with everyday life.
The carnival is held every February and I must say that the city really comes to life during this period of time. I have been to Venice when the carnival isn't on and surely the atmosphere cannot compare, the carnival is the soul and the life of Venice, despite the city having its own unique characteristics.
There are many events that go on during the carnival such as masquerade balls in which you can rent costumes if you do not wish to purchase any. Not only is this your chance to wear your "most-ridiculous-outfit-that's-been-hiding-in-your-closet", it is also an opportunity to bring out that fancy glamour dress you only got to wear once when you bought it. The whole city acts as a fashion catwalk as you can see all sorts of different costumes where ever you go. A stage is also set up in the main square where it hosts various activities throughout the day for example theatrical plays, performances and games for kids.
I shall let the pictures do the talking!
As for the downside, it is nothing out of the ordinary. Prices are generally more expensive and there is a large amount of crowd but these are all expected during peak season especially on a festival like this. I would really recommend going for it as it will change your perspective of Venice!
